Buildable areas

How site boundaries, fence setbacks, and non-buildable polygons define the envelope where tables and rows may be placed.

Updated 2026-08-22

A layout is only as honest as its buildable area. Solar Layout Studio derives a buildable envelope from the site polygon, fence setbacks, and non-buildable regions.

Site boundary

The site polygon is the outer civil or lease envelope. If the boundary is wrong, every downstream count is wrong. Treat the source survey as authoritative.

Fence setbacks

Fence setbacks inset the usable area from the boundary. The rendering and geometry engines treat fence setback as a first-class layer so it is visible, not only baked into coordinates.

Non-buildable areas

Wetlands, roads, substations, steep slopes, cultural keep-outs, and other exclusions are modeled as non-buildable polygons. Multiple non-buildable areas can exist on one site.

Why this matters commercially

Estimators sometimes price “the whole fence line” while engineering has already lost 8% of the area to setbacks and keep-outs. Connecting buildable area to table placement is how that gap becomes visible before a bid is issued.
