Steel Intelligence overview
Concepts behind steel pricing, consumption, material normalization, galvanizing, and escalation as they affect solar structural cost.
Updated 2026-08-22
Steel Intelligence is the workspace and engine set for structural steel cost logic: mill pricing, consumption, galvanizing, and escalation. Solar racking and pile programs are steel-intensive. Small index or coating assumptions become large commercial exposure.
Pricing and normalization
Steel is not one commodity. Coil, plate, tube, and fabricated sections do not share a single price. Normalization exists so consumption in tonnes can be compared on a consistent material basis before extras and fabrication.
Consumption
Consumption analysis ties layout and structural quantities to steel mass. If table counts change and steel tonnes do not, the commercial picture is already stale.
Galvanizing
Hot-dip batch galvanizing and continuous galvanizing are different cost mechanisms. The galvanizing engine distinguishes coating cost that is already in pre-galvanized coil from zinc consumed in batch dipping of fabricated steel. Mixing those logics double-counts or undercounts coating.
Escalation
Escalation models exist so time and index movement can be applied as an explicit layer rather than as an undocumented pad in every kilogram rate. Pair this with estimate-level escalation so the same exposure is not applied twice.
Project cost implications
Steel output is an input to estimating and to procurement packages. It is not a mill quote. Always reconcile engine outputs with current supplier correspondence.
